Yom HaShoah Yellow Candle Project
Wednesday, April 23, 2025 • 25 Nisan 5785
7:00 PM - 8:15 PMNHS Social HallJoin us for a Yom HaShoah commemoration led by Rabbi Ferro, featuring the lighting of Yellow Candles, which will be available for purchase. Together, we will honor the memory of the Six Million who perished in the Holocaust and reflect on those whose lives continue to be taken by hatred and violence.
Following the ceremony, we will screen "The Boat is Full."
The Boat is Full is a 1981 Swiss film. The movie centers around the moral dilemmas faced by Swiss authorities who must address the plight of Jewish refugees trying to escape Nazi persecution. The movie morally awakens Switzerland to the human costs of their political decisions.
The Yellow Candle program was established in 1981 by FJMC clubs in Canada, New England, and beyond to ensure the memory of the Six Million endures. Inspired by the traditional Yahrzeit candle, it burns for 24 hours as a symbol of remembrance. The candle's yellow wax reflects the Yellow Star that Jews were forced to wear under the Nazi regime. Its container bears an image of young prisoners in Auschwitz-Birkenau—a solemn reminder of the Holocaust's impact on future generations. The program's logo, a yellow Magen David entwined with barbed wire, preserves the memory of those who suffered.
Yellow Candles will be available for purchase in the NHS lobby.
This year, as we remember the victims of the Shoah, we also hold in our hearts those who have been taken hostage and those whose lives have been shattered by violence in Israel. May our remembrance inspire us to stand against hatred and preserve the dignity of all people.
